Most of the dogs/puppies we rescue have not had prior vet care and come from very unhealthy environments. Unfortunately, without proper vaccinations, Canine Parvovirus is highly contagious and can be deadly. All too often, a nonvaccinated pup becomes very ill with parvovirus and needs urgent treatment. We often have to work quickly to get the sick pup in veterinary care, in order to increase its chance of survival.
Parvo can be found in almost any environment, but not every dog who comes into contact with the virus becomes infected. Once a puppy is infected, there is an incubation period of 3-14 days before the onset of the symptoms. The virus attacks the lymphatic system and intestinal tract the most, which causes the pup to become lethargic, have a lack of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever. These symptoms need to be medically treated in hospital vet care immediately, and monitored closely, to increase chance of survival.
When caught early enough and with proper treatment, the pup can survive. Treatment is generally in-patient for 2-5 days and the cost ranges approximately from $1,500-$2,500 per patient, with some costing over $6,000.
Let's join together and FIGHT for these pups when they are at are their most vulnerable. Fund a share of treatment cost, ask a friend or family member to fund another share, or ask your coworkers to split the cost of treatment for one of our rescues.
